When I have foreign or balikbayan guests, or even guests from out-of-town, I do not expect anything. They can be my house guests without having to pay bed & breakfast, as long as they are perfect guests - - - livens up the house with their presence and their "kuwento", treats everyone like family, tries to do his/her share in the household chores (although the maids make sure they don't do anything, but trying is good enough).

Firstly I am not from the Philippines but here is a rough run down of what I try to bring for my relatives. My 20/25kg baggage allowance and 5kg hand carry consists of:
frozen quality beef
frozen t bone steaks
frozen bacon rashers
frozen continental frankfurts
frozen fish and chicken fillets
seasonal fruits such as grapes or cherries
5kg chocolates
5kg assorted candy.
Where are my clothes you ask, I had them airfreighted 1 week before.
Now if you want to buy some sort of household gift then once you arrive have a look around and see what they may need e.g. television set, washing machine, refrigerator, new bed/mattress.
Now if you really want to score very good brownie points buy either a 'magic sing mike' or a karoke machine.

it is always best to bring something from your place, but i assume that you are already here in the philippines?
avoid giving a host anything that others could (jokingly) criticize them for not providing their guest with (like, 'a fan? maybe he felt too hot?').
many filipinos are embarrassed to accept money or expensive gifts, but treats or foreign candies & chocolates are always welcome.
if you must give an appliance, perhaps an inexpensive music player would do

If you would want to give your host something, perhaps you could give some gifts that are unique or native to your origin to show your appreciation and so that they will remember you. For example, if you are Japanese, a nice kimono or fan would be very nice.
Or treat your hosts to dinner at least once (also to show your appreciation).

☻Chocolates
☻Soaps, Perfumes or Other stuffs from your country.
-----But if you want to offer them something useful as a gift and if you really know/see that they need that particular appliances then go for it. Make sure that it's heartily given. <*-*>

simple token like a souvenier keychain from where you're from would suffice. nothing fancy. or you can be more direct by asking your friend/host what they would want. that way, they'll have exactly what they want/need.
