1st a question to you: are you serious? or is this just a troll?
If this is a troll, then the uninformed, immature and simplistic answers given so far are sufficient.
If you're serious, let's talk.
The answers (yes, answerS) can be many and varied.
What is poverty? It varies by country, region and culture.
It is often said that the poorest in the USA live better than the average in many other countries. So who is in poverty?
But, still, what is/ how do you measure poverty?
Is it measured by possession of material goods?
In some cultures, it is considered that material possessions possess YOU, and are not desirable.
Is it in not having sufficient shelter from the elements and nature, or insufficient food, water, or medical care? Or the latest iPod or cellphone?
There is an ancient and revered book that tells us, "The poor will be with you always." And, so far, it seems to be accurate.
I think the physicians dictum "Primum non nocere" (First, do no harm), contains a key:
as it is with so much else in life, the solution lies locally, rather than globally.
In YOUR day-to-day life, practice "first, do no harm."
The ancient book says it this way, "If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men."
Yet we fight and envy and quarrel and covet (envy someone else's "things") and steal and hurt (both with physical pain and with our words.)
Such things ought not be so!
What are YOU doing to help prevent/stop this?
Why, then, would you expect someone else to be the solution to the problem if YOU are not willing to do YOUR part?
And in that you have your answer.
Hurtful self-interest.
Money is not the answer.
Education is not the answer.
"Things" are not the answer.
YOU... are the answer.

Boy! That's a tough one. In my unqualified opinion, poverty is the result of two causes. The first being poor administration of a country. The second, being as we are told in Psalms that "All the nations that forget God will be turned into hell" accordingly the solutions would be good government and for the people to abandon their false gods and idols. It has been noted that many third world countries which are war torn and ravaged by famine and poverty are those who have failed to acknowledge the Lord.

Education is the key, and opportunity is the lock. With a education poverty can unlock the lock and be successful.
To those people that think that poverty = laziness you are way off base. Most people given the key to open the lock would take it in a heartbeat.

If every financially 'able' person was to sponsor a child at only $50 a month and every celebrity grow up and help by building orphanages then this would definitely help eradicate the poverty problem over time but people are so selfish these days and this is too much to ask from anyone. i donate to the homeless guy I see at the station everytime I walk past him and i am willing to help others when I can by donating my clothes, shoes and other worthwhile items and I am NOT the wealthiest person, far from it.

Education, education, education. It is the way out of everything!!! Following that, go to a Head Start school and watch what they do during their day. They go early, eat breakfast, brush their teeth, finish up potty training, learn English if they don't know it, learn how to play together without fighting, learn to fight "fair" when they truly disagree, learn to take their turn in circle time, learn the basics of education to move on to the next class next year successfully, learn to wait and watch for their turn at the learning centers, eat a good lunch that gives nutrition to their little bodies in case there is not much food at home when they leave at 1:00PM, have quiet time where they must let someone else do all the talking, have their own turn at all the talking. Everything you need to know to fight your way out of poverty is being taught to the 3 year old class in NW Oklahoma Head Start program.

there are no solutions to poverty. as long as humankind exists, poverty will be forever rampant. poverty can be ended only in theory but not in reality. only in a perfect society can there exist no poverty. someone will always take advantage or control someone else, its human nature.

We already have them. Social programs.
If people cannot afford rent, they can qualify for rent assistance, known as Section 8.
If people cannot afford food, they get food stamps.
If people are disabled and cannot work, they go on Social Security Disability.
Social programs are built into American life; we pay taxes to support them. It is the proper Christian thing to do, to share a portion of your income for these causes in the way of taxes. It is also an Islamic principle.
