If you have a filter, that will do more to aerate your water. Also, powerheads that disturb the surface or direct surface water toward the bottom so the top (oxygenated) water circulates well throughout the tank will do more than an airstone.

Also, if you have a protein skimmer, the small bubbles this produces will help to oxygenate the water to a degree.

You should use an aerator in all aquariums, with one or two exceptions(e.g small tank with fish that only like still currents)

yep its definetly a necessity, the majority of saltwater fish cannot acclimatize properly to low oxygen levels it would be bad
