Ideas for/how to make homemade pet Halloween costume?

I want to enter my two miniature dachshunds in a Halloween costume contest but do not have time to order costumes online, and our store selection is very minimal. Any ideas on what they could go as and how I could make it homemade? The categories are scariest costume and cutest costume, so ideas for both categories would be helpful!

You could buy plain coats and add onto them. If you can sew, you could build hot dog buns out of fabric and fiberfill, and sew those onto the purchased coat. Or you could just glue things onto the coat, like fake hair made of yarn.
