The state and local response stands in sharp contrast to the emotional and logistical collapse of Ray Nagin and Kathleen Blanco. Will those two, at last, get the humiliation they so richly deserve?

ooohhboth: The city had to be turned over to the Feds because Kathy, when asked what she needed said: The 82nd Airborne Division. A light infantry attack force not equipped to do rescue and recovery. All they know how to do is kill people. What did she need that for?

Barry C: You're on the wrong track. I'm not comparing the events. Here's is the contrast. The Ca coordination will be used as an example of what to do next time.
Ray and Kathy did NOTHING but yell for help, after the fact. Brilliant

Actually, the worst thing to happen to New Orleans were the socialist policies of the democrats.

Not even close to the same scale. so fare we have lost ~ 1500 homes, which would probably affect maybe 6000 people over a variety of cities and jurisdictions up to 200 miles apart.

Maybe you can fill in how many people and buildings were affected in New Orleans, and how densely packed those were (human and utility services taken out too that are not missing in CA). OTTOMH, I would bet there are at least 2 orders of magnitude difference.

When all of the population of San Diego is swimming in the ocean in a hurricane for safety, then we can start to compare the management issues involved. Until then, apples and oranges.

Actually, the Oakland Hills fire (where I happened to be visiting that day in the early 90s) was worse then this week, because a similar number of homes were destroyed, and the fire was right up to the edge of the most densely populated sections of the Bay Area.

Nagin, Blanco and the democratic party are the worst things that could happen to New Orleans..... The situation in New Orleans showed the spotlight of what the democratic party "DID NOT" DO for their area....... It's easy for them to blame bush, but guess what they shouldn't throw stones when living in a glass house.....

Just look at what Willian Jefferson did.....He had the military fly him in so he could get his "DIRTY" money from his fridge........

so why haven't more people woken up to realize how inept the democratic party is

Well... I can neither agree nor disagree with you. While response time to New Orleans could have been better, there were other issues - the whole area was affected. In CA, there are many people, supplies, and resources available to help the evacuees. Access to needed items is available... Roads, electricity, etc.

As a person who dealt with 4 hurricanes the year before (3) of them within one month, I can tell you the folks in Florida feel bad for those who lost everything in Katrina but in no way blame the president. Blanco and Nagin deserve all the credit for the failure of their state and city.

The blame falls on a heck of alot more people than that...BUT, Nagin and Blanco are totally inept and incapable of doing their jobs.

I see your point and I am inclinded to agree but still, there are several key differences between the two that make them different enough to be closely compared, sort of. The contrast is amazing though isn't it.

BULLSEYE!!!!
The local politicians in New Orleans had a 5 day warning and failed miserably. CA local politicians had no warning and look at the difference.
What we are seeing is the different mindsets. One mindset is we are all inept and stupid so we need federal govt to save us. Other mindset is there is the problem if 'I' can't fix it at least I'll make it better.
Congrats Socal

Babe, I have to disagree with you. The first thing Nagin did [besides brake down because his city was destroyed], was ask for aid. Bush got it, about 3 months later in the form of armed National Guardsmen instead of things like housing structures, medical supplies, or food.

If it weren't for charities and churches half the population that stayed in New Orleans would be dead because they all would've starved to death or died whenever they got a cut. Basic supplies from the US Government didn't come for another month.

California did not have to wait on Brownie - the "heck-of-a-job" guy to get help sent.
And Arnie didn't get told to turn the state over to the federal government by Bush before help would be sent.

Katrina, followed by the Bush administration, are the worst things to happen to New Orleans.
