A defendant can be acquitted or exonerated. A plaintiff can't.

exonerated does not belong. While it means the same as acquitted, defendant and plaintiff are two similar terms.

Acquitted fits with defendant and exonerated. It does not fit with plaintiff.

Acquitted applies to a defendant, not to a plaintiff
Acquitted is synonymous with being exonerated.

Acquitted: Innocent; Freed from blame

Defendant: A person required to make answer in a legal action or suit.

Plaintiff: A person who brings a legal action.

Exonerated: To free from blame
