The Electoral College was deadlocked in voting between Jefferson (Democrat-Republican party) and Burr (Federalist), due to the fact that one of Burr's party members voted for Jefferson.
The vote went to the House of Representatives, who were once again deadlocked. The break for Jefferson came when Federalist Alexander Hamilton preferred Jefferson over Burr, thus giving Jefferson the victory and causing the duel where Burr killed Hamilton.
