I'm 21 years old, pregnant with our first child. When I was 18 I had a breast reduction. I was told at the time that my breasts were too big for breastfeeding and that with the surgery there was a 50/50 chance for me to be able to do so. Has anyone had any personal experiences with breast reductions/breastfeeding. Were you able to? Were there any problems? If I could I would like to breastfeed, but I was aware when I had the surgery that there was a chance I wouldn't be able to. I would appreciate any input. Thanks. =)

First of all, a woman's breasts are NEVER too big for breastfeeding. It might make it more challenging, but not impossible.

Secondly, nursing is definitely possible after a reduction. My best friend just had the procedure a year ago and was able to successfully nurse her little girl.

While the surgery does reduce the amount of breast tissue, and therefore the number of mammary glands and ducts, you will have "milk making" capabilities. You might find the need to supplement a little, or nurse more frequently, but you should definitely try it.

Best of luck!

I had a breast reduction 2 years ago. I waited until after having kids because I was afraid that I couldn't b/f.

My cousin had a reduction and she was able to breastfeed. We were surprised, PLEASANTLY of course because she was able to even pump.

Each person is different.

I don't think you were told correctly that you were too big to breast feed...........I was a 38-G and I had no trouble with both of my children.

It really is different with everyone. You might have no problems at all, or, you might not produce enough milk. There's no way to predict. Stay positive, and hope for the best. All you can do is try, and remember if it doesn't work, your baby will do just fine on formula, so don't feel bad.

Good luck!
