I've tried the local knitting guild but was hoping for a younger crowd (average age of the group was senior +). I'm trying to establish a group that fits into the 20s,30s,40s age group.

You can send a public service announcement to your local newspaper to get members. Do lots of charity projects to keep them interested.

Knitting and crochet has really made a comeback this past couple of years. You might be surprised how many people would be interested in joining.

Why don't you approach a local yarn store, and see if they'd be interested in hosting a knitting club.

Our local cafe set up a knitting and crochet club which gets together every other week for dinner, chat and working on our craft projects.

I started my own club in Boston a few years ago for people in their 20's and early 30's. I had trouble getting enough people who were already knitters, so we made the first few sessions "lessons" and we got a lot of interest through word-of mouth. People who could already knit were free to just knit and chat, or they could help to tutor people who were new to knitting. New people were asked to bring cotton yarn and needles and we had them make a small washcloth. After the first few sessions, most felt confident to start a new project on their own (simple scarves mostly).

We also allow people to do any other crafting that they like. We've had things as varied as calligraphy, stone mosaics, quilting, and jewelry making. That also got people interested in getting together, even if they weren't necessarily doing the same thing.

We have sessions as someone's house/apartment, and people bring food and drinks potluck-style.

Good luck!

Try meetup.com, putting an add in your local paper, put up a notice at your library and in your local craft shops. If you have knitting friends/relatives already, plonk yourself in a park, cafe and knit!
Edit: A google search showed that there is already a knitting guild in your town. Why not join them?
