Our federal government has given it's view of "marriage", being the union of one man and one woman.

We are beginning to see the movement for civil unions. Beginning in January of 2008, 10 states, plus D.C., will have offer civil unions.

Are they recognized, or are they not? We are only defining marriage, but not the "civil unions" or "domestic partnerships".

This is a "tears you up inside issue"... Its quite ridiculous how this has been blown out of proportion and how humanity has to call upon law to define love for another individual. Its really quite simple, when searching for your partner its hard enough to find someone that will love you for who you are and give you that needed puspose in life. Once you find that person (if you are lucky enough) your aspirations are to live a joyus life, but to your discontent the very same authority that issued you the birth certificate defining you as a living and breathing human being inextricably denies you the opportunity to have your relationship with the one that you love legally recongised. Will empathy ever become an amendment?

No -- the federal govt does not recognize any benefits for same-sex couples.

DOMA -- the Defense of Marriage Act -- enshrined gender-based discrimination into federal law. Until it gets constitutionally challenged.

I believe those terms will be synonymous with marriage, but will fall shy of the true nomenclature of it in the end.
