No, actually. Some of my first memories as a child was listening to gospel music particularly at home with my mom on Saturdays and with my grandma on Sundays. All my life I was introduced to different kinds of music. But gospel says something to me because my Nana reared me on that. Now my daddy on the other hand was another story. I could remember being at home with my dad and him putting on some Stevie Wonder, " Signed, Sealed, Delivered". Or Sam Cook, or Otis Redding. ( That old school soul). Then I would bounce down my aunt's house and listen Keith Sweat, Bob Marley, Or Earth Wind and Fire. My brothers and my cousins were the ones that really taught me about rap and hip hop. (Because they older and would keep me almost every day which is how I really learned how to dance.)
And no matter where I go there was always I always heard Aretha Franklin. Some kind of a way they even would throw some country or blue-grass in the mix ( I know right!?!) But, I'm thankful for all of my music influences because it taught me how to appreciate all types of music and as a songwriter it really helps me to be versatile.

Yes I was --- even though my Mum was a great fan of artists such as Stevie Wonder and Dolly Parton, she always loved playing hip-hop songs created by musicians such as Tupac, B.I.G, Aaliyah, LL Cool J and Nas.
And even to this day (10 years from then), I still enjoy hip-hop, although I do occasionally listen to other genres. It goes to show that what you listen to at youth will always have some sort of impact later on in life.

I was exposed to reggae and soca first. I remember when I first heard soca music, the song Dollar Wine was hot back then, and everyone used to do the dance when Colin Lucas was saying gimmie dolla, gimmie dolla. I think one of the first reggae artist I heard for the first time was Buju with Wicked Dickey, and Terror Fabolous Action with Nadine Sutherland.

No, I remember Red Hot Chili Peppers (who overlap a little with hip-hop) as the first group I listened to, Californication is the ****. Then I just listened to whatever was popular for awhile. Then it was Will Smith, then Nappy Roots, then lots of hip-hop. I put Holidae Inn and Get Low and songs like that on mix CDs, but I got tired of them quickly and looked for better hip-hop.

Nah, you wouldn't think that by all the hip hop I know. I came up when MTV first came out with songs like Billy Squire, Def Leopard and others, then I heard Blondie and Herbie Hancock and I was Hooked on hip hop.
