Because to do so would often require that we compromise on our principles. Demonstrating our willingness to do this places us in the sights of anyone who wants to make us do it. That is not getting along either.
So ultimately, one must stand up for one's principles, and if that means not backing down, then so be it.

its because hostility and competition is human nature, and the way the society is for that matter.
