what does it mean to be "selective" and what does it mean to be "permeate?"

Selective means choosing certain things. In membranes it means that certain materials can get through the membrane and other materials cannot.

Permeate means to go through something or spread through something. In membranes, permeable means that the membrane lets something go through.

selective:cell protiens choose passes through a cell
permate:anything passes through the cell
