My first favorite Sci Fi movie was

But it was the bomb for me as a kid

I'm going to go with Gattica.
It had Ethan Hawk and Uma Thurman.
It's definately a sci-fi movie but the part I really liked is that there isn't a single thing about the movie that couldn't happen or worse yet might happen in the near future.

My favorite has to be the George Pal production of "The Time Machine" (1960). An inventive, spellbinding story of exploration and discovery, love and friendship and predictions of the world to come, many of which are coming true even now!
