Very odd. Squaring that I get 969.69...

You should have gotten something like 31.6227766

It has some way of estimating the square-root in a memory efficient manor. It's pretty close though. The real square root of 1000 is somewhere around 31.6.

In fact most of the calculations you calculator makes are just really good estimates and it isn't actually making the true 100% accurate calculations.

Because that's the square root of 1,000. The third root is 10.

Are you sure you entered everything correctly?
If so, maybe you need to reset the memory.
Sometimes things go haywire that way.
