My nose has been running for weeks now (ah, Illinois autumns!) and my dr prescribed Zyrtec. I've never taken it. What is your opinion of this medication, and how might it help/affect me? I am a 43 year-old female who is 5'3" and 140 lbs. Thanks.

Wow, how lucky you are to have been prescribed this as most insurance companies will not cover it unless you have tried everything else on the market. It's a bit pricey.
Zyrtec is a wonderful anti allergy medication. You only need one a day. It does not make you as drowsy as other medications like claritin and benedryl.
My husband has been on this med for over a year now. He is allergic to just about everything in the environment (lol how nice huh?) He used to get rashes and hives and lip swelling on an almost daily basis. Since he has been taking the zyrtec he has not had a single outbreak unless he forgets to take it. He takes it at night before bed so most of the drowsiness is over by the time he wakes up.
I have taken his twice, once had severe itching caused by ultram and another itching episode due to vicodin. Took benedryl first but was really irritable and still itchy so he gave me a zyrtec, i was itch free in an hour and it lasted a long time.

Is it regular Zyrtec or Zyrtec-D? i love the D- for decongestion. the other does nothing for my seasonal allergies. but i work at a pharmacy and there are alot more people on the plain stuff. i don't recall seeing an insurance company not cover it in quit a while.

Zyrtec is a good 2nd generation antihistamine. It is very similar to Claritin. I have never heard a complaint about it.
Zyrtec will be going OTC on December 26.
