A linear equation is any equation that makes a line when you graph it.
This is a great way to learn how to graph them http://www.math.com/school/subject2/lessons/S2U4L3GL.htm

And here is a great page that helped me last year when I was in Algebra 2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linear_equation
It explain all of the different types of linear equations and there are some good links at the bottom. :)

a linear equation is when you have an equation that has a y equals something an number preceeding an x and a plus or minus and a number, for example:

y=4x+2

to graph this you need to make a table of inputs(x) and outputs(y), the input is any number you want it to be, usually it's just 1,2,3,4, and 5 for example.
Then you plug those numbers in the equation as the x (so basically you're replacing x).

Let's say we're doing number 1 it would be like this.

This is the equation we have:
y=4x+2

Now we're going to replace it with 1.
y=4(1)+2

now we can slove it:
y=4(1)+2 (multiply the 1 and the 4)

y=4+2 (add the 4 and the 2)

y=6
so 6 is the answer for your output.
so the input was 1 and the output is 6
those two numbers would be the coordinates on the graph which look like this (1,6)
so you start at the center of the origin move to the right and get to 1 the move up 6 and that's where your dot is at.

Remember the word LINEAR. Graphically, linear equations appear as a straight line (as opposed to parabolas, or any wacked pattern). Remember, LINEAR = LINE.

the equation will be in the form of:

y=ax + b

where 'a' is the slope of the line. If 'a' is positive, it goes from top right to bottom left. If 'a' is negative, it goes from top left to bottom right.

where 'b' is the y-intercept of the line, meaning the point at which the line cuts the y-axis.

try graphic y = x to begin with, and then graph y = 3x and see the change in slope. and then graph y = 3x = 5 and see the change in y-intercepts.

good luck!

linear equations are simple
they are equations (ex. 2+2=4)
they are a specific type of equation that when you graph them they make lines
LINEar remember the "line" in linear
non linear equations dont make lines (ex. parabela)
an example equation of a linear equation is
2x+5=35

well im really bad at math too but arent linear equations the ones where you have to find y=mx+b and graph the slope and stuff?
