Why cannot I just climb the darn tree, or at least send a trained monkey up on my behalf? :-)

P.S. Or shake the tree a bit, or use a ladder, or a long stick, or ...... well I'm sure you get the picture. ... If there is a will, there is [always] a [better] way.

I would wait for fruit to fall. There are always a few good ripe fruit amongst the rotten ones that drop from any tree. If I cut down the tree, then there would be no more fruit to grow. As long as the tree stands, there is the possibility that the branches will be longer and heavier next season, and I'd have a reachable harvest in the future.

If you are the owner of the tree, you may have already got more fruit than you needed to eat and you may have even distributed some to friends and relatives. In that case, you should leave some fruit for animals who can reach it. They also have a right over nature. (You can't be the complete owner of a natural product). If you are not the owner of the tree, ask the owner to sell you that fruit for a price! If nobody is the owner of the tree, then again leave it to the care of nature. Even if it falls after rotting, its seeds would continue the generation of the trees! And certainly if you still want it as a matter of adventure and have the capability to cut the tree, you can surely find a way to reach the fruit too! You just have to find a clever way before the fruit falls and somebody else picks it up!!

Ever heard of a ladder? Or, you could just climb the tree. I was quite a monkey in early years, especially at trying to get what I wanted! Sometimes a good fruit falls ... From the wind, or the shaking of a tree, (smiles). Nobody would want to eat BAD fruit ... You will get a belly ache or find a wormy inside like oscar the grouch has to live with. Never cut down a tree unless absolutely necessary. Who knows? If you wait a few days a fruit closer to the ground might be ripe for the plucking. Then again you might want to cut that tree.

I'm sure there would always be a way to reach the fruit of any tree

If there isn't, I'd look for a shorter tree

Waiting for a rotten one to fall would not serve to do anything, however, cutting down the tree itself would waste the only source of your fruit

Hypothitically speaking, why cut down a perfectly good tree that can produce many friuts for years to come just to get a single fruit. Instead of waiting for the fruit to fall, go buy one at the supermarket. Don't be too stingy in life. Your opportuntiy cost should be far greater than a piece of fruit. I understand that you are posing a philosophical question, that being whether one should take action for something they want or to wait for fate to bring it your way. Personally, I think you've answered your own question by pointing out that the fruit that falls basically can not be eaten because it is rotten. Or atleast I know no one who would want to eat rotten fruits. My solution to your dilemma is just to go to the next tree. There are many trees in an ochard if you know what I mean...

If you have means to cut the tree you would have no problem getting to the fruit. This is basic intelligence. So cutting down the tree or wait for the rotten fruit to drop is unnecessary.

I would climb the tree. If it were impossible to climb the tree, I would shake the branches, find a long stick to poke into them & the most beautiful, perfectly ripe fruit would fall. Or, I would get a ladder & pluck them myself.
One never has to settle for rotten fruit--& it hurts to see a tree cut down for any reason.
Alternatives......

Edit: This what I get for not looking at your answers first! Yet, the point I really wanted to make, is that there always alternatives.

Seeming how patience is a virtue and we all can use much more virtue including me, I would wait for the FRUIT to fall from the tree, for in doing so the Fruit is not rotten it is ripe and therefore just right for eating.

One never needs to cut down the tree unless it is for the salvation of man. And waiting for the Fruits of our labor and life is essential to our existence and growth for eternity. Ciao my friend.

Audacious. I'll starve if the fruit stays on the tree, but if I cut it down then I'd have no way of eating ever. So, I'll wait, even rotten fruit is better then no food.

On the other hand, if food was not so scarce, I'd go searching for something else, like antelope.

I would climb it.
I wouldn't want to cut down a tree that has been living for a while, and i know that i don't want my fruit to be rotten in the first place.
