generally, they would be pecking in search of food, maybe you have termites in your walls that the woodpeckers are trying to get to, have a termite inspector check your home.

Others have mentioned the possibility of termites. You may want to have your home inspected carefully not only for termites but also for wood rot. Woodpeckers generally select unhealthy rotting trees to bore into looking for bugs (of course those bugs select unhealthy trees because they can live there easily).
Either way, have a good inspector come out- it could save you a lot doing it now vs waiting.

They hear little bugs in the wood and they are trying to get to them for food. So you need to exterminate your house very well .
If you don't mind the termites, try playing a radio in the room near where they are at. A fake owl or one of those ant and mice buzz repelers might work.

Try a fake owl. Most birds are scared of them because I guess their kind of mean. We use them to keep seagulls away at the shore and my grandfather uses them to keep the squirrels under control. It's worth a shot! Just don't get a wooden one = )

Put up mirrors, of the Miltary variety...stainless steel. The woodpeckers will attack the perceived interloper, and give up when they cannot get him to go away.
otherwise, hire a flying cat......

Easiest way is to shoot them as there's usually only a pair around a given area.
Get a fake owl and secure it to their area, that sometimes works.
In my experience sprays and that stuff you use to keep kids from sucking fingers does not work.

I have heard that owls scare birds away. They sell plastic ones at Wal-Mart for this purpose.
