Speed is a measure of physical displacement over a given time.
Strictly speaking, this is the average speed, because the object may or may not change it's speed during the time interval.

Example: A car travels a total of 17 miles during a 30 minute time interval, including slowing down for other traffic, stop signs, traffic lights, etc. The car, nevertheless, covered a distance of 17 miles in 30 minutes, making its average speed 34 miles/hour. (Regardless of direction of travel.)
