I heard that people buy the moon in acre parcels, and wondered if this is a good investment or a con.

I don't know who the signatory nations are, but there is an international treaty that declares the moon non-ownable, (or whatever that term is.) No one can claim it. We have a precedent right here on earth: Antarctica. I think the treaty extends to all extraterrestrial bodies.

It's a con. Nobody's defending it or occupying it, so it's still pretty much anybody's. Let's say China lands there, erects a base, and says "This is our land on the Moon."

If they shoot down anything trying to come take it over, and we can't beat them in a war here on Earth, or do anything else to make them leave, then guess what - it's theirs.

All people could do is go to Beijing and wave a piece of paper at the government beurocrats. "Interesting - let me see that." they might say.... then they take the "deeds" into the john and you hear a flushing sound, after which they come out looking satisfied. That's all a deed to the moon is worth right now.

Land belongs to someone via concensus, and failing that, by force. The concensus is usually protected by force, though. (Countries' armies defent their territories, which they agree to say who within them owns what).

Right now it is wothless. Unless you can find a cheap way of getting there and back, it is worthless. No one has a right to stake a claim on the moon. In fact, the USA is the only rightful body to stake a claim on the moon. But the spineless govenment has refuses to.

It would be only a novelty items because no one has claims to any part of the moon.

It would cost you hundreds of millions to go to the moon to stake your claim anyway.

the moon doesn't have a government yet. When it does, THEY will decide how much it costs and these little certificates for ownership will be laughed at.
