Americans would like to believe that heh typical American voter is active in politics and rational and educated about political issues. Is this an accurate belief?

No, not only are most voters not educated in political issues but worse, most activists have no idea either. The activists take talking points and run with them, most have NO idea how the policies they advocate have or will effect our nation. The sad thing is when policies have a failing track record and people still buy into them like they have never been tried before.
I've concluded that most people are stupid. I hear ignorance is bliss but I know a lot of ignorant fools that are pretty miserable.

Many are, but we already know who we support. Election are decided by the marginal voter, who pays little attention and is persuaded by the campaign. That is why politicians seem so trivial and repetitious. I use to worry about this, but if you watch elections you will see that politician who stray from what voters want, lose big. Democracy works imperfectly but it works. You should read the research on the The Wisdom of Crowds: Why the Many Are Smarter Than the Few and How Collective Wisdom Shapes Business, Economies, Societies and Nations.

No. I know very few people with the political understanding to make an informed voting decision. Most of their decisions are based on who puts on the best song and dance as opposed to what their elected officials actually stand for.

probably not. most of the kids at my school say that their parents will vote for Hillary Clinton because she's a woman.
