Does it only do it when its cold outside,or does it do it all the time even if its hot out side .If it only does it when its cold outside then it sounds to me like theres condinsation in the exhaust pipes i wouldnt worry about it it will evaporate mines been having white steam coming out of it for the past 5,000 miles but it only does it if its cold outside .

Please add details like how hot did the car get how many miles year make model size of the motor. Many times old worn motors never stop smoking after the water/coolant corrodes the piston rings or the motor is run hot because the temp gauge is not in the coolant. Motors burn oil as they wear valve guides piston rings faulty crank case ventilation systems. You'll have to drive that motor to see how much oil it actually uses each 1,000 miles. Puffy white smoke could even be a brake booster full of brake fluid and that fluid being sucked into the motor. Or alternately a bad vacuum modulator automatic trans sucking in automatic trans fluid. The mechanic and probably you too did not drive the car before the gasket was replaced he you did not know the condition of the motor. Before spending a pile fo cash have a compression test performed and CLY leakage test. Just remember a head gasket and Cly head overhaul is not a new motor. You may be shopping for a good running used motor before it is all said and done. Emission controls like cat converter can't take lots of oil comsumption and may also need replacing. Actually if the cat converter is working properly the cat will after burn the oil and eliminate the smoke. Good Luck

white smoke means that there is water in the system. 1) waters or coolant is coming from a cracked block or a blown head gasket
2) some water is always present in the exaust made by the catalinic convertor . carbon monixide flows over pellets coated in platinum which turn into harmless water.
so, no. 1 is bad.
no. 2 is normal

White smoke indicates water getting into the combustion chambers. Several possible causes include a cracked head (bad) or block (really bad), or a cracked intake manifold (much less bad). You'll need a qualified mechanic to diagnose it.

This is usually caused by water condensing in the exhaust pipe, and should stop when the pipe heats up and the water vaporizes.
