Depends on who says it and how it's said/meant. Some folks use "darlin" as a friendly generic way of addressing someone (instead of hey dude or hey lady). Doesn't mean anything more than that. But in other places and at other times, it is an endearment used to indicate that someone is special to the speaker.

There is no meaning to it. Many older people still call younger people darlin or those of us from the south might call our spouce or significant other darlin. People up north will call them Darling.

It really depends on what part of the country you are in. If you are in the South, the Bible Belt...it's just like calling someone sweetie or honey....male of female. It's a weird term of endearment. It's huge in NC,SC, GA, TX, KY, TN, and several other states.

Depends on who it's coming from and how it's used. If it's a nice older guy, it's a term of endearment. If it's a punk holding a gun to your head then it could be insulting.
It's from another time. Don't worry too much about it.

It's considered a term of "general endearment"....I use terminology like this a lot if I can't remember someone's name...in particular, a lot of my sons' friends' names escape me, so I just call them "sugarpie" or "cutieface" or some such non-specified general endearment.

Aaaabsolutely nothing at all. It's just a form of address directed at the person you're talking to.... usually t he opposite sex. It implies no emotional connection to the person, no special feeling for him or her, just an impersonal pronoun.
