Read an article-people lost their gym memberships for loud grunting while working out. Grunting is supposed to give an edge in weight lifting but Scientists aren't sure yet. Research is inconclusive as yet.

I've been a member of a gym for a couple of years, and I haven't noticed a whole lot of persistent grunting in the weightlifting room. In other gyms I've gone to in the past, there is the occasional patron (usually a guy) who routinely grunts or loudly exhales while doing reps or deadlifting. I always thought it was somewhat amusing, but it never bothered me. That article on Yahoo notes that loud grunting may or may not give an advantage in weightlifting, but it also could be a result of holding one's breath during the exercise, resulting in a forceful exhale that ends up being a grunt. As a yoga practitioner, I know it is unhealthy to hold one's breath during heavy exercise. I always breathe out during the exertion and in during the letoff (I actually learned this in the practice of martial arts and it seems to help with aerobic capacity). So grunting may not be that good for you. As for social unacceptability, unless the person is doing it to purposely get on people's nerves or it disrupts classes, I see no reason for chucking the person out. Some people can't help grunting during exercise. Personally I don't do it, unless my breathing is off.

P.S. The "no grunting" policy at Planet Fitness sounds just ridiculous...

I personally think grunting is just a great release of some form of either frustration or pleasure... which ever one that fits at that present time is appropriate no matter where you are who you are in. Actually, I am having a bad day and I have been grunting all day and I don't think it is inappropriate...

I need to grunt or I will punch someone!

Grunting is always inappropriate. I'm a special forces operator and the real tough guys know that emotion is the first sign of weakness. Silent is deadly!

Grunting is inappropriate when you're not doing anything physical.
I HATE it when people sit behind me and grunt.
It's either because they're bigger people, and they like.. Have to or something? Or they just want to be GOD DAMN ANNOYING.

Grunting is appropriate when done in conjunction with groaning as needed.

They must have been grunting in the bathroom.

If not, that must've been some severe grunting.
