Some people, not all, choose to get as far away as possible because of fear, they are not sure whats going to happen and they are afraid they can't handle what does. Facing our fears is a hard thing, seeing a child suffer just puts some people over the edge. Love is what overcomes, Hope and Love, they can move a mountain. Some people are afraid to let themselves love disabled children, it hurts us anyway to see a child suffer and when you let a disabled child into your heart that pain is doubled but what they don't realize is the reward for loving a disabled child is twice what it is for anyone else. The hugs, the tears, the smiles, they are worth more than silver or gold, and they will never be forgotten. EVER!!!

I am disabled and I have often thought about that question, I go to family reunions with my family, when we were children we we all played together when we were young only because our siblings were there but as we get older...my sister told me that she was even ashamed of having a disabled sister. Anyway now that I'm grown up it's like my cousins don't know me any more, our doctors even feel uncomfortable around us I think we just have to swallow our pride and strike up the conversation.

Sadly enough some people think that they are freaks and don't want to be the kid that has a freak for a friend, as for what can be done about it that's simple, parents need to set good examples for their kids and make them socialize with the special needs children and they will realize that these kids aren't anything like what they imagined.

Ignorance. Fear. There are so many reasons. I have a child who is autistic and when I tell people they then start to treat him differently. More with pity than anything and that's the worst thing that they could do. So, I know that it's ignorance that drives them to do what they do and not anything that is intentional. Just human instinct, I guess.

Sometimes is not that they don't want to, its just that they have no patience. and you need tons of patience to deal with any individual with disability, whether they are 5 or 50.

Because they don't know what to say or how to say it and are afraid of looking foolish.

They are probably uncomfortable. People tend to fear what they don't understand.
