Very few gays will tell you that they really want to be gay, with all the stereotyping and putting-down going on in the gay community. Gays cannot help the way they are, just like heteros cannot choose to be gay. You just are the way you are born (Yes, I'm siding with the "born" option), play the hand you're dealt so to speak. Some may seem like they are gay by choice because many gays don't realize they're gay until they are older.

It is neither. It is an abnormality caused by being born into a dysfunctional family system that is so dysfunctional that the child's psycho sexual development is altered.
Normally, a boy models on his father. He imitates him to a degree on an unconscious level. If the father does not have too many faults, the boy is able to accept his own maleness. By having a nurturing, loving mother, he can accept (at a very deep level), the idea of being intimate with a female. This is all on an unconscious level and no conscious decisions are made.
The sexual instinct is extremely strong. If the boy's mother is so critical or mean to him that at his deepest level, he is terrified of being intimate with a female, the sexual drive will cause him to be attracted to men.
Also, if the father is so terrible that the boy at his deepest level cannot accept his maleness. he will not only have same gender sexual attraction, he will feel as if he is a female in a man's body (gender dysphoria).
The same thing happens with girls, but of course with the opposite parents. Some children are saved from this because a boy may find a positive male role model in an uncle, teacher, clergyman, or someone else who befriends him before and during puberty. Likewise with a girl.
I think it is more accurate to talk in terms of same gender sexual attraction, rather than terms like homosexual or lesbian. Of course, calling peaple who have this affliction, gay, is nonsense. The word gay means cheerful and happy.
I have had male and female friends who had same gender sexual attraction and encountered many as patients during the 20 years I worked as a RN on psychiatric units. Not only does Freud's psychiatric theories affirm what I have said, but every time that I knew enough about a persons family background, there background was consistant with this.
The reason that people have been criticcal of people with same gender sexual attraction, who acted on this attraction, is that there used to be a strong Taboo against having sex with the same gender.
As I said, the instinct to have sex is extremely strong. The reason for the Taboo against sex with a person of the same gender is similar to the Taboo against incest or having sex with children. These Taboos help to channel the sexual drive similar to the banks of a river.
Those Taboos help keep the sex drive in a healthy direction even if the family dynamics would otherwise cause a person to have same gender sexual attraction, sexual attraction to children, or sexual attraction to a close family member.
It's too bad that the Taboo against having sex with a person of the same gender is almost gone and that the Taboo's against incest and having sex with children are loosening. There was a book published by the University of Minnesota Press a year or 2 ago that the title of the book was "Adults Having Sex With Children Is Not always Bad".
This book said that sometimes if an adult and a child have sex that it can be a very "life enriching" experience for the child. This is terrible.

Your argument doesn't hold. It's fine for you to believe that it's by choice, however, you can't say "look at the olden days", as a valid argument.
The reason why no one was out of the closet in "the olden days" is because we would be killed for being gay. Since, obviously, the bible itself was written ages ago, and it does speak of homosexuality, we must have existed back then.
The ancient Romans practiced homosexuality openly.
Of course, I'm just saying, your argument doesn't hold good reason, even though, it's fine if you wish to believe that it's a choice.
But, I disagree, I did not choose to be gay, I also do not know of any traumatic experiences that could have gone through that turned me this way.
Why do people ask these questions and why does it matter?

Both. NRI's of gay people's brains often shows the activity of the oposite sex. Others become gay over time for other reasons. Maybe not so much a matter of choice. I have known of people with XXX,XXY and XYY chromosones, ambiguous sex organs, organs of the opposite sex and hermorphadites. So there are more than just male and female sexes. And there must be similar differences with brains. For people condemning gays, this is something to consider as well as alleviat self condemnation by gays against themselves.

I remember being very very little and having crushes on my female friends long before I knew what gay or straight was, so I definitely say you're born that way. Hell I've had pets that clearly weren't interested in their opposite sex.
Some people will ignore the way they are, but really you are what you are. I've seen straight girls that think it's cool to date girls and I've seen guys that deny their gay because they don't want the stigma, but you can't change what you instinctually go for.

I believe some people were born gay. Some gay by choice. That topic was also on the Tyra Banks show.

Born. Children differ drastically based on how many other children their mother has had.
There is specific scientific evidence that second and subsequent males from the same uterus have a stronger chance of being gay.
