I have skeins and skeins of yarn - seemingly everywhere in my house! :)

I just moved and it seems like every box I start to unpack has a skein or two in it. I'm looking for ideas on how to organize and store the yarns. I thought about a "shoe caddy" the type that looks like a bookshelf. I have a plastic 4 drawer thing that has some yarn in it - but the top seems to bend and then I can't get the drawers out easily.

Does anyone have any fairly inexpensive ideas?

Thanks in advance!

When my shoe caddy started bending like that, I simply removed the drawers, which I continue to use in other areas, and put the yarn in see through, zipper close plastic bags.

I have also discovered closet hangers with shelves, and I use the drawers in them. I made my own. see the link for what they look like.

We've got a couple of plastic tubs full of yarn in plastic bags. I keep the wool seperate from the acrylic, and wherever possible the different plys seperate too. I do some knitting and weaving, usually using 5 ply wool, but have other plys around for different projects. Dividing by ply helps because it's usually that, rather than colour that matters for what I'm doing.

I don't know how much room you have for storage, but I am a big fan of underbed storage containers. They can even be boxes until you get them all unpacked, After that you will have a better idea on how large of a unit you actually need at that point. Then i would sort by color keeping the tiny remnants together for a granny square type afghan.
