backbone= how strong you are as a person; character wise; perservering; assertive; how much you are willing to take; you have to put a lot work into it.
wishbone=(you just simply pull them apart and bet to see he gets the greater end of the bone).
success does not just come by you being hopeful and waiting for it to land in your lap. you have to go out and get it. you have to work for it.

Sure. If you use your backbone, you are working towards achieving your goal. If you use your wishbone, you are just hoping it will happen but not doing anything concrete to bring it about.
