McCarthyism was a modern-day "witch hunt" which took place 50-60 years ago in the U.S. to expose alleged communists despite little actual evidence, and it was not unlike the witch hunt depicted in the play.

It's an allegory of it. McCarthyism was modern-day witch hunting but with Communists.

i did the crucible at school a couple of years ago, i cant remeber the full details, but i think there was some trial in america - the McCarthy Trials - i think many people were accused of being communist, as in the book many people are accused of being witches. At both times the people were subjected to scutiny and were fearful that their neighbours would say that they were doing something bad to stop themselves being prosecuted. something along those lines anyway, i think.
