Affirmative action as it stands now addresses the wrong problem. Issues of race are most often actually problems of class. Allowing privileged black kids into college over privileged white kids isn't doing anything other than beefing up "diversity" statistics. I think affirmative action is absolutely necessary, but it should be based on socioeconomic status rather than being solely based on race. If you do it that way, true diversity will follow.
But taking underprivileged kids with an inferior lower education and throwing them into a place where they're expected to know the same things as the rest of the students who had the benefit of a competent high school education also doesn't help anyone. The people in on affirmative action are set up for failure. It's also necessary to make sure these students have access to resources that will allow them to succeed.

Affirmative action is just another form of bigotry, judging people based on their race.

However:

As a journeyman toolmaker and an engineer I can tell you that the majority of skilled trades jobs in manufacturing in Detroit are held by whites while the majority of people in Detroit are blacks. This tells me that it is more difficult for blacks to get into the primary section for middle class jobs, skilled trades in manufacturing.

Affirmative action does not address these jobs though, affirmative action addresses education and government jobs which generally results in lowering standards to force employment/educational opportunities.

Affirmative Action is a bigoted mess, but, with the lack of opportunity I really do not have a better solution and there has to be a way for minorities to move into the middle class.

To be honest, I have thought about that often. I used to hire people. I decided the best way to actually have equality in hiring the best method would be to hold the interview without ever seeing the candidate. Seperate rooms over an intercom or a barrier between. All you need to know about the person is experience, personality and other qualifications. It might conceal voice quality, but women could also achieve equality in hiring if a device was used to make her voice appear male. Seriously, this is possible and would propably do more to eliminate discrimination than anything else..

The same way I feel about nepotism.

People have a problem with Affirmative Action but say very little about nepotism.

Nepotism is the showing of favoritism toward relatives, based upon that relationship, rather than on an objective evaluation of ability or suitability. For instance, offering employment to a relative, despite the fact that there are others who are better qualified and willing to perform the job, would be considered nepotism. The word nepotism is from the Latin word 'nepos', meaning "nephew" or "grandchild".

susi stole my answer.
It sucked 30 years ago when I was going for jobs where they would give you a test and the best scores were supposed to go to the next level but wait your not the right color so nope.
This brought many things to mind like 2 wrongs not making a right and punishing the next several generations for what someone so far removed from me MIGHT have done.
So I for one am sure it sucks now.
All this brings me to one thought.
You are not equal with me if I have to LET you be equal

Nothing more than reverse discrimination. Anytime race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, etc. is used in determining who should or should not get a job, promotion, admissions, etc. it is discrimination.

Well, I wouldn't want to be hired at a job or get into a school based on the color of my skin, but if you're into that, go for it.

it's necessary, or at least it was. whether you want to believe it or not, there are still a lot of racist employers out there. just saying two groups are equal doesn't mean they are (as shown in the dec. of independence -- "all men are created equal")

As long as white people don't want to get rid of it, we will continue to have it. Each year, more and more of them are waking up to it: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,301722,00.html
