5v - 2v = - 9 - 12
3v = - 21

yes, v = -7 but "give a man a fish, feed him for a day. teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime."

12 + 5v = 2v - 9 1) put all integers to one side, +9 both sides
21 + 5v = 2v 2) put all v's to one side, -5v both sides
21 = -3v 3) remove v coefficient, divide -3 both sides
-7 = v

12+5v=2v-9
subtract 2v from both sides
12+3v=-9
subtract 12 from both sides
3v=-21
divide both sides by 3
v=-7
