Alphanumeric is simply the letters and numbers that make up the side of the map in order to find places on the map.. For instance, A1 means to follow line A and line 1 to its center point.

This is probably all you need. Longitude 79.23 W and Latitude 43.39 N.

Another alphanumeric grid is the postal code, set up by Canada Post to direct letters to very small, specific areas.

A geographic area/subject card file provides access to the maps. In order to find a land use map of Metropolitan Toronto, check the card file under Metropolitan Toronto, Ont. - Land Use. There are a number of land use maps to choose from. Once you have decided which one you would like to see, look for the code number on the upper left hand corner of the card. Each map has been given a code number (letter and number, 'M5') and is filed in the drawer by that number.

The map drawers are arranged in alphabetic order by code (E, T, W), with the cities in Metropolitan Toronto coming first, followed by Canadian and then foreign maps. Within each drawer the maps are arranged in alphanumeric order (M1, M2, M3, ...).
