Besides the most obvious answer to gain credibility through presentation, the significance of proper grammar extends to all levels of human interaction.

And the significance can be summed up in one word: Structure.

Why do mathematicians still prefer to write out their complex calculations rather than simply punching them into a machine? Why do the best chefs still make their own bases and sauces from scratch rather than saving time with pre-prepared products?

It has to do with much more than sqiggly lines on a chalkboard or a perfectly cooked meal...Maintaining proper structure ensures control of the finished product. If the finished product is not right, be it a calculation or a bowl of soup, the structure can be analyzed step by step.

In language, proper structure ensures proper communication...obviously a vital requirement in the professional and academic realm.

Grammar is the way we make sure that our words convey exactly the meaning we wish them to. If you have incorrect grammar, your meaning can be misconstrued, sometimes with disasterous results. In the professional world, grammar helps keep things on track. Would you be happy if your pharmacist was unable to read the prescription your doctor had written and gave you the wrong medicine? Or if your mechanic wasn't able to follow the instructions in repairing your car?
If you want an example of the effects of poor grammar, read some of the 'translations' that come with any appliance or technical device from Asia. They're hilarious.

Important:
> first, you spent years in school studying, training, and practicing how to read and write correct English. It's a pity if you will not use it right after all those grueling years of study.

> second, there should really be a standard to be followed so there will be a discipline and a reference if confusion surfaces. For instance. She's in the room versus She was in the room - here, you'll know whether I am telling you that the girl is still or not in the room anymore.

> here in Yahoo Answers, I believe they're observing correct grammar. Many in fact are practicing conversational English here, not only finding answers to questions. I commend Yahoo for this great innovative job.
