I heard the age of consent here in Texas is 17. Does it have to do with protection from statutory rape charges? I know someone who is 17 & is dating a guy in his 20's. Would he be protected from statutory rape charges since the girl is 17, going on 18?

Two meanings -- but the one that you seem to be asking about relates to the age at which people are to consent to having sex.

Below that age -- children are presumed to be incapable of giving consent -- so that any sex with someone over that age is considered to be rape (sex without consent) -- because it is based on a statutory legal definition of lack of consent, it is referred to as statutory rape.

Each jurisdiction has specific ages -- and some also have special provisions if the people are close to the same age -- even if one is over and the other under. Check you local listings.

In that case, yes, he should be.
The major rule is that girls under the age of 17 cannot consent. Whether or not they do, it is called rape.

every state has different ages, if its 17 she has to be 17 in order to protect who ever shes having sex with from being arrested for stat rape. if she was under that age he could be arrested.
