Common sense has been tested in the crucible of real life. Theoretical knowledge, for the most part, has not.

One (common sense) is learned through trial and error; the other (theoretical knowledge) is inherent, innate.

Common sense reveals a broken limb in the water that we know not to be so but theory gets us to the true position of why it is this way.
