No it is not some type of "mistake", it is just a trait of that species. It is no different then when other animals play dead or how some animals will drop their tail to escape. Heck there is even a species of bird that will vomit when it feels in danger.

"Mother Nature" does not make mistakes, period. However, mistakes in nature can be made when man tries to mess with things.

Two very important things. Nature is Nature, not male or female. Nature has never made a mistake.

Nature is not in any way affiliated with religion. Although, Nature could be a religion.

Logic. If fainting goats are a mistake, then so is the opossum. Like I said, Nature does not make mistakes.

Mother nature, not being a person, can't make mistakes. The only mistake would be to attribute personal properties to "her".

Why the "fainting goat" behavior was selected for by evolution, is a different and much more interesting question.

Fainting goats have a medical condition called "myotonia congenita". They don't actually faint, but their muscles seize up when they are startled. Myotonia congenita occurs in many species, including humans. With goats, the difference is that people specifically breed them to have the condition. In some people's opinion I'm sure that all medical defects would be considered a "mistake", but I'm sure everyone doesn't feel that way. It's more of a personal opinion.

I do however question the ethics of purposefully breeding goats to have the defect.
