gotta be the misfits, because they kind of taught the world that it's ok for punk to tell stories, and not just be all about politics.
they put more drama and story telling in their lyrics and invented horror punk, so they're definitely my favorite punk band.
i'm talking about the original line up with glenn danzig, not the newer crap.
so, yea, the misfits.
how bout you, you didn't say yours.

Well my favorite punk band is probably always going to be the Ramones, because there's nothing not to love about them. The Ramones are punk and punk is the Ramones, perfect punk guitar, great poppy lyrics on simple, almost artistically simple lyrics. I like the quote that the Ramones were simple in a way that you have to be sophisticated to undersand. And the typify the genre like no other, no BS, no frills, no posing, just ridiculously fun loud music.
Although the Voidoids are also always worth a mention, the whole debut is great, with few low points and "Blank Generation" is quite simply one of THE punk songs. And it's well known the Richard Hell invented punk style ;) as well as being a member of the Neon Boys, Television, and the Heartbreakers before the Voidoids.
Other bands that MUST be mentioned when talking of classic punk: the Sex Pistols for being the other band that defined the genre and were in turn defined by the genre, the Clash for being one of the best of the originals and for (most but not all of) their diversity, the Saints for coming even before the Ramones and never getting that credit probably because Australia is so out of the way, Wire for inventing post-punk in the midst of the first wave of punk-punk, and Johnny Thunders for helping define proto-punk in the New York Dolls then helping define punk with the Heartbreakers.
Other favorites:
Rezillos (ultimate fun time cartoonish punks), Angry Samoans (the link between garage, punk, and hardcore), the Lurkers, Eater (the youngest of the first wave), Descendents (my favorite harcore), Circle Jerks (also my favorite hardcore), the Germs, Devo, Dead Boys, the Damned, Buzzcocks, Boys, Blondie, early Black Flag as previously mentioned, Agent Orange, Zeros (so called Mexican Ramones), Undertones, and Teenage Head (one of the best Canadian bands ever).
I'll stop now before I have my whole library written down.

I haven't listened to punk in a while but I was obsessed with The Boils' "World Poison" album when I was 14/15.
I haven't heard any of their newer stuff, but that album is awesome.
What's the point in me naming punk bands I like if Dan C named them all already?
That dude (Dan C) should get best answer. Definitely.

The Offspring is my favorite punk band. I guess I liked them because I used to be against punk rock but as soon as I heard the Offspring I went nuts. Because I'm pretty fly for a white guy.

Ramones. Probably the first punk rock band. Johnny Ramone's simple guitar style became quite legendary, creating the basic punk rock guitar style. And I enjoy Joey Ramone's way of singing.

The original lineup of Black Flag, with Keith Morris (BillyBob Goldstein) on vocals. They wrote the book and defined the essence of hardcore American punk rock. Everything after them was just variations on a theme.
