an equation is two expressions set equal to each other.
an expression is just a combination of variables and numbers using the math operations like +, -, x, /

Example: 3x + 5 + 2x - 9 is an expression
Example 3x + 5 + 2x = 9x - 4 is an equation

you "solve" equations but only "simplify" expressions

2x + 9 is an expression.
2x + 9 = 0 is an equation.

An EQUAtion has an EQUAls sign. It's a statement that two expressions are equal to each other.

An "expression" is just a combination of numbers, variables, and operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponents, radicals, etc.).
