He gets on his hands and knees with this small hand held hoe/rake tool, pokes/digs his lawn up and down and puts some of the grass in a bucket to dispose of. He already has the world's most perfect lawn.... no patches, weeds, very green, etc.... so what is he doing????? Thanks for your help.

It's called aerating. Poking holes in the grass allows the water to go down deeper beneath the roots of the grass instead of sitting at the surface or running off completely. The lawn will yellow in spots and look dry in areas where this needs to be done and the soil beneath has become hard not allowing water to penetrate the way it should.

If he has no weeds, he using a "pre-emergent". This is a product you can buy at hardware stores. It's like granules you sprinkle on. The box will tell you how and how much. We use a really inexpensive hand held spreader and walk around the property spreading the pre-emergent as we walk. We don't do this on the grass though.

Anyway, this material prevents weeds from germinating and spring forth at all. If you already have weeds, you need to pull those up, then apply the pre-emergent to keep new weeds from germinating. You'll see a huge difference in about 6 weeks when no weeds come back and then it's time to re-apply. We put this in all shrub areas, rocks, under trees, anywhere really except our lawn.

Sounds like he's also taking care to "feed" his lawn with a fertilizer which keeps it nice and green.
A 16-16-16 fertilizer is just a good general all round fertilizer for grass. Again, you can find this in all hardware & garden stores. Then you make sure you water your lawn after you fertilize and this will need to be done every couple months.

He's probably got an automatic watering system as well. Watering should be done, consistently and depends on where you live, how hot it gets things like that, and done at night so the property has a chance to deeply absorb the water. During the daytime, a lot of water evaporates too quickly.

A beautiful lawn and landscaping takes attention to it. But, the results can be stunning.

He's weeding the yard. The grass he is disposing of is, in fact, weeds. The guy obviously needs to get a life!!

Personally I agree with the aeration answers, but, do you wonder if just maybe he's actually using this process as an opportunity to keep an eye on you??

(Remember if you think everybody is talking about you - you just might be right !!!)

:-)

He's an obsessive-compulsive and he is going nuts. If you really want to have fun, watch him when it doesn't rain for a month after the water ban goes into effect.
