Tax oppression was a key element. England was taxing the hell out of the colonists after the French and Indian War to pay for England's war debts and america felt wronged. At first they weren't even considering a Revolution but England didn't leave them any choice. Religous freedoms were also considered.

They wanted each state to govern itself. But It didn't work because there was no central government.
