Like why don't serial killers kill the detectives and cops, and do knowing how killers operate lessens a person's chance to get killed or is it unexpected luck of the draw in alot of cases. You can be walking down the street on your usual routine and someone come up behind you.

Most murders are a crime of opportunity, where you just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The only thing you can do to protect yourself in that circumstance is to make sure you have a buddy system and avoid walking alone anywhere. Also, most crimes happen in quiet times of the evening and near places of business. There has been an increase of home invasions. If you can at least LOOK like you have an alarm system, dog, and a less-penetrable home, you will be less likely a victim.

Just remember what you were taught as a kid: don't talk to strangers. Also, if anyone does come up to you and start to drag you off someplace, scream bloody murder: "FIRE! FIRE!" People vacate buildings and homes when they hear that scream. They get too scared to come out if you yell rape or help. If you can keep them from taking you to another spot, they will be more likely to give up on you as a victim. One thing you can do if someone grabs you is go slack. Just go absolutely rag-doll slack. If you can manage to lock yourself around the person's legs, that would be help also. Another thing that makes someone let go is to grab onto them. Just become a huge weight that they can't stand. Generally, they will release their hold and push you away. If you must fight, go for the eyes or groin. Going for the chest and shoulders will NOT do you any good. Stab the eyes, kick or hit the groin..anything you can do to them will make them want to get away, because the last thing they want is to be seen struggling with you in the street.

Knowing how a serial killer operates won't help you out. If they have a pattern, that can help cops find them, but it won't help you stay safe unless here is a definite "only blondes" or "only joggers on lonely paths", which you won't go jogging on a lonely path alone if you're thinking of safety outside.

You know how thieve operate. Will you leave the keys in your running car in the parking lot of a supermarket? Knowing you can be robbed or killed is good if you manage to succeed in staying alive but there are only relative gaurantees on this earth for safe passage and no real insurance in the long run. Do what you can and hope for the best.

It's the same thing as for protecting yourself against rape: pay attention to your surroundings, take a self-defense course, carry pepper spray, make as much noise and fuss as possible if someone tries to force you into a vehicle, and if you see a chance to run, do it! Oh, and you're much less likely to be a victim of anything if instead of walking alone at night you take your vicious-looking pet German Shepard with you.
