As Canadians, why do some people in the TV industry try and immitate American shows?

Oh, wait, its not immitation, its downright copycatting.

American Idol... Then comes Canadian Idol!

Are you smarter than a 5th grader... Are you smarter than a Canadian 5th grader

I mean, come on, these are all crap shows that are time fillers and are simply there so they can show more commercials.

Why don't we copy some quality British BBC or have more GOOD Astral media shows?

Seriously... Shouldn't we be moving away from American TV instead of towards it?

I don't really think the IDEA of the program matters...

Come on, there must be a gazillion copies of a show with a singing competition theme.

Its this whole blatant "Canadian idol" thing... Maybe if they put in SOME variation, even in the title, it would be ok...

This is a disgrace to the Dominion.

Actually, I think Idol came from the UK as well as Ramsay's shows and a few other.

Given the fact that Canadian producers pay as much attention to US TV industry happenings as what's going on in their own homeland...

...and that many of the "Canadianised" remakes of American reality and game shows you hate so much are themselves based on British-created formats (example:American Idol began in the UK as "Pop Idol" ages before Fox licensed the rights for the US market;after the massive success it got came Canadian Idol).

Not even "Big Brother" and "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" are purely American creations. Both are American remakes of British shows.

Seriously..."immitations"?

Well, Canada does have some great shows.
Well, Degrassi for instance. I like that show.
Most American shows are original but some shows are copied, like Ugly Betty. It came from Mexico.

As an American, I can say that I am not surprised that you Canadians are trying to copy us as it has been your habit for many, many years and it can be quite hard to break.

because nobody has an imagination (including us americans). if a show is good it's cloned a hundred times until it's no longer enjoyable. "deal or no deal" was an original (i think) show that got copied so much i stopped watching it. or if a show gets popular, they change it until it becomes a parody of itself.
