Here are a couple of quotes. The first is from one of the neocon idols explaining how they operate and the second, although from a Republican describes how Democrats believe.

"Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't want war neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country". Hermann Goering 1945

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." Theodore Roosevelt (1918)

Tyrany and totalitariansism thrives on strict obedience and unquestioning of aurthority. Democracy thrives on dissent and difference of opinion.

One of the most patriotic things an American can do is to question authority when it's moving in the wrong direction. It doesn't necessarily mean that everyone is suddenly going to throw in with you, but speaking up when it doesn't seem right is the right thing to do.

Being called unpatriotic for voicing your own opinions (one of the basic tenets of the constitution) is in itself the most unpatriotic thing a person can do.

Patriotism does not always mean following the easiest and most popular path.

Reality challenges erroneous beliefs. Try discussing history with a religious fanatic. Ask a Christian about dinosaurs. They don't want to be confused with the facts. Especially that their president is as unpatriotic and treasonous as a person could be.

By "some", I supose you mean mainly Democrats. As you emphisize by "lousy", in your question.

We are not in the same boat as he or his administration. Some information we are not and should not be privy to. The Iraq situatuion is slowly coming out of the basement and showing promise. Not such a bad foreign policy I would say. After all , he did say it will take years. And it did.

Unpatriotic, is trashing this policy by emphisizing continued failure, repeated death tolls (ours, not the enemy's), continued calling for troop pullouts as we have failed, continued coverage of terrorist activities while at the same time purposefully ignoring our successes and achievments.

After a time, those who feel we have an obligation to the Iraqi people get tired of this unpatriotic attitude.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse.
A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight; nothing he cares about more than his own personal safety; is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of men better than himself"
John Stuart Mill

what sort of pop could publicly criticize his son? If Bush Sr. disagrees with Jr's distant places coverage, they might have a effective father-son verbal replace in inner maximum. He hasn't publicly criticized his son.

Some people have been taught to never question their government. People who have received a decent education know that it's not only their right, it's their responsibility to question the government when it is not acting in the country's best interest.
