I need a discussion topic?

Question

For my English class, we have student-led discussions and I'm stuck. I can't think of a discussion question that can go on for atleast 20 minutes!

It doesn't have to be about English, any topic. And I'm in high school so any topic is fine.

So far, with the answers, I'm thinking either abortion or euthanasia. =)

The best way to have a discusion is to try to make it two sided. Either you are for something or against it. A debate in other terms. To keep it going for as long as possible, try to be a mediator and argue both sides, if someone says something bad about the topic, try to say why that is NOT bad, or call on someone else to say why, once you get started, it should be a breeze to keep it rolling.

Some issues that i have found that get people going for hours are: Abortions, War in Iraq, President Candidates, Smoking/Drinking laws and (risky and not recomended for english) religion.

How about the darfur crisis? My Model UN club had at least an hour of discussion on that topic. Also, you can discuss the war in afghanistan and whether troops should be removed from there now, and what the implications would be as a result from the pull out. If you are part of the US or Canada, you can talk about how your countries' troops are in the most dangerous parts of Southern Afganistan, you can talk about what it would happen if they were to pull out. THere are so many topics in the world to discuss, i also suggest googling a newspaper site and scanning the World and Politics articles.

Choose something very controversial like the war in Iraq, or abortion. Just make sure you can back up your part. Domestic abuse, childhood abuse are good too. Pick something you feel strongly about so you can make a good impression on the teacher. They can tell if you are half-hearted.

Need more info, can it be on anything or does it have to be related to English? There are plenty of social issues that could go on for 20 minutes, but they aren't really related to English.

If allowed, you might want to discuss the upcoming Presidential election process, that should be good for 20 minutes at least!

you have to pick something topical, like whats in the news...that way, there will be plenty of kids that know what you're talkin about and so be able to contribute...

Dont pick the McCanns though (bad taste) how about, why do super powers (countries/goverments) choose to spend millions on blowin each other up rather than feed the world? and dont take none of that ..." if food is donated free then the workers of the country will suffer because no one will by the food they produce.." Just gimme the million quid your about to drop on jerkwater in the guise of a daisycutter bomb ...and get mCDonalds over there..

Since there is a lack of space on this planet, and more and more people, and too much trash, how about we colonize trash islands? We could create them --- build them as sea worthy floating land masses, and use prisoners (secret or otherwise) as test agents to guage inhabitability, etc...We can call it: Operation Recyclobiosphere Bouy

How about euthanasia, that is ending someone's life who is really old or has a terminal disease and they are in pain. Should doctors be allowed to end someone's life who doesn't want to live because of their failing health.
