I work at a place with a public restroom and my concern is why do people make it so messy. Do you leave pieces of tissue or paper towels all over your floor at home. Or leave the lights on and the water running. Or not flush. We are there to serve you in other ways and the restroom is a privilege and all need to help keep it clean. If we were in there every 5 minutes to check it out we would never be able to serve you in the purpose of the store be it food or clothing. And if something has run out let an employee know. what is the harm in that? I always thank the person who comes to tell me.

I've been to some relatively nice restrooms where they have nice decorations and the upkeep is great! Sometimes I feel as though the restroom was a better expereince than the place I was actually intending on visiting.
Yet there is also the restroom where you feel like you are in hell. You walk in the walls have been stripped of wallpaper and mold is growing, the floor is slippery you slip your way into the first stall only to realize there is a floater staring up at you. You go into the next one and sit down. Finally you complete your deed and realize that the toilet paper is al gone and lying on the floor in a mass puddle of something wet on the floor. You are forced to drip dry, thankfully you did not have the runs that day. Then at the sink there is no soap and the only water offered to you is cold. Lovely! and to top off the splendid experience in this putrid bathroom there is a sign urging employees to wash there hands with the nonecistant soap!
Walmart bathrooms are the worst! They are always shut down for cleaning and yet they never get any cleaner!

Hey man, you've just described my bathroom! (Kidding...) Anyway, I think it was Howard Stearn who did some bathroom cleanliness evaluation some time ago. I can't recall what the results were... However I do recall something I saw on TLC once about restrooms. They stated that people for whatever reason don't often use the first stall, therefore it's typically the cleanest. However, this doesn't excuse diners and such from keeping up their restroom checklist that's typically posted somewhere on a visible wall inside. But on the flip side, this doesn't keep my old friend Steve from eating lunch every day at Hooters and doing his ritual "splatter crap" in the men's room.

It usually depends on the establishment. Usually gas station and rest stop facilities are the absolute worst, in part that there are no attendants at rest stops, and at gas stations there is usually only one clerk who needs to stay behind the counter at all times to supervise the store and tend to customers. I think fast food restaurants are mediocre, a little gross, but not nauseating. Usually sit down restaurant establishments keep their restrooms tidy and usually a hostess needs to do a bathroom check every 15-30 minutes to make sure the facilities are stocked and wiped clean. But I think we can all agree we feel the happiest doing our business in our own bathrooms. Well, most of us there are some pretty nasty people out there!

Yes,they are really disgusting and the only time I EVER USE a public restroom,is if it is an emergency and I can't hold it in. I have been to many restrooms that are beyond disgusting and I would be afraid to use it,not kidding! No soap,no toilet paper, and sometimes missing toilet lids, not kidding!

Dirty restaurant bathrooms are a pet peeve of mine. How could the staff not know the bathroom is disgusting?
What really makes me sick? One time my husband was in the bathroom at IHOP and as he was washing his hands the cook came out of the stall (he'd been in there for some time according to my husband) and walked right out the door without washing his hands. He was so disgusted he complained to the manager.
Makes me just want to eat at home instead!

Hahaha. I totally understand where you're coming from. My biggest pet peeve with regards to public bathrooms = no toilet seat covers. UGH! And then I'm forced to like cover the seat with like yards of toilet paper for fear of coming in contact with it. I can also be pee-shy sometimes (lol, I know)...so stuff like that makes it even harder for me to relieve myself. Haha. I know. I'm weird.
