Pete Townshend of The Who. Really great songwriter. I mean, who can come up with something like, "Pinball Wizard", "However Much I Booze", "Who Are You?", "Slip Kid" and countless others. Each song he has written, with The Who and solo, have a meaning, a light to another day, and that is what makes him a great songwriter. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant are others I love as well in their songwriting. Neil Youngs "Old Man" is a timless classic. Cannot forget Niel Young.

I agree. I also consider John Lennon and Paul McCartney to be my favorite songwriters. I also consider Bernie Taupin a favorite, since he's written some really great songs for Elton John.

Nigel Blackwell - Half Man Half Biscuit. I think they appear just mostly tongue in cheek and witty casting a satirical eye over society but oh they are so much more than that you just have to really listen. Admittedly he ain't a tunes man and it's all done to the sound of a post punk guitar but he's no novelty act. He has a special place in my heart for going to London at the invitation of the big record company flashing big money. On the morning of the meeting he sent this note to the rep - 'I feel a little queasy and have gone for a walk. If it's not too much trouble, can we meet on the bench by Peter Pan's statue?' " He didn't sign. He felt that guilty he offered to pay back the train fare lol Magnifique :) Because of that he stayed unfettered and free to do his own thing for decades...much to my delight. One of my faves - Floreat Inertia : - I could be tugging on the beard of science Like a cheeky schoolboy But I couldn’t be bothered That’s why I’m still in the box room Face down in the last ditch My natural home I Can Do That But I don’t really want to Oh, I used to cajole Gordon Giltrap I used to think that it mattered But the low drone of the treadmill Is the sound of my hopes being shattered I should be standing in a chaos of sunflowers With a girl from Machynlleth But I’m down at the Children’s Zoo Kicking off on the goats Increasing doubt – decreasing hope Even my imaginary friend went and changed his mind Oh, I used to cajole Gordon Giltrap I used to think that it mattered But the low drone of the treadmill Is the sound of my hopes being shattered Oh, I turned my back on Nazareth I used to think that it mattered But the low drone of the treadmill Is the sound of my hopes being shattered
