...a populist choice, methinks.

Sir Simon Rattle and William Gladstone come to mind...but hey - they're not - er - 'sexy' in mediaspeak!
Why couldn't they just leave it as 'Speke'?

Most locals stll call it Speke Airport. Speke bring the area of Liverpool where it is located. Was the first airport in the UK to be named after a real person (Doncaster Sheffield is called Robin Hood airport but his existence is doubtful) and of course the line in Imagine "Above us only sky" was too good a chance to pass up.

I think he was pretty groundbreaking and very inspirational arguebly maybe there could be better people to name the airport after, i don't know who. Definetley not Paul or Cilla, even though i love them both. John Lennon really moved some people deeply as he created classic music which stfruck a cord with many. Personnally i don't think Paul or Cilla are on his creative level.

I mean come on Suprise Suprise and Lilly Savage?

I totally agree - I think they named it after him because he was the most famous, not the most worthy (although I am a big fan)

But, to be honest, the only other scousers I can think of are Cilla Black and Paul O'Grady.

He may have been responsible for some great songs but lets face it, the guy was a drug taking weirdo so 'No' not a good choice. There must have been more worthy Liverpuddlians.

Lennon was instrumental in forming culture, here and there. . . . . I think for the worse. But I am not profitting from this dumb society.
