Strictly speaking, a beer stein is not important to German culture (all by itself). What is important to the culture is how beer steins have been decorated in ways that reflect the German culture in general and local cultures in the specific.

Decorating beer steins to reflect local or general ideas causes them to become cultural object. Having steins decorated in ways that allow them to be identified to local areas preserves local values and local art forms.

Hope I helped!

When we talk about the origin of the word “stein”–we go back in times to Germany, where “stein” meant stone. Created for the consumption of beer, these German beer steins traditionally had a lid which could be opened and closed at ease.

Germans are big beer drinkers. They are also big in porcelain. Put the two together and you have the porcelain beer stein. They are very good craftsmen and have very intricate designs on their products.

This site has a history of the beer stein. It's very informative and probably just what you need for your speech.
