It has evolved into its own "position" in the lineup (Hafner, Giambi, Ortiz, etc.), where back in the day it was mostly filled by a slugger who could no longer play every day in the field. I don't know if it's all that great for the game to see younger players being so one-dimensional. But the AL will never drop the position and I don't think the NL will ever adopt the DH.

It's a good thing in that it makes the game a little more interesting for some fans. I on the other hand am fine with no DH. In my opinion it's like steriods in baseball. Steroids make the game more interesting. However, it's not the way the game is played. The DH is like that, it's not the way baseball is played.

I used to be an Oriole fan and thought DH was a good rule, now that I am a rockies fan, and have watched many NL games, I see how much of the game pinch hitting for the pitcher is.
AL lost a lot when they put in the DH.

I think it is a good thing. If there is no DH then they might as well not even have separate leagues because nothing would be differentiating them. It makes one league more offensive friendly and the other league more pitching friendly. Sometimes the style of play is better in the NL but sometimes it is more fun to watch in the AL. I do not mind not having to watch a pitcher try to hit at all. Now if one days pitchers start to hit then I would be all for no DH.

This is a great queston, but I would say it is a great thing to have the DH rule, b/c, u get 2 things, in 1 league, the AL, you get to see more power and it is another threat, do u think Travis Hafner or David Ortiz would be as popular if they played 1st base? In the other league, the NL, you get to see what the pitchers can do with the wood, example, Cubs Carlos Zambrano. On the downside, bench players in the AL, especially backup catchers r screwed, b/c there isn't anyone the skipper has to pinch hit for. In the NL, it puts the most important player, the pitcher at risk of getting injured. Its also fun to see a pitcher, who has been in the AL this whole time come to the NL and bat.

I barely remember when the American League didn't have the DH, but I'm a baseball purist, I'd get rid of the DH. I'm a Yankees fan, but I don't like the American League having the DH.
I agree with you 100% Dave O

I don't like the DH. The NL is more of a thinking man's game. Do you pull the pitcher for a PH even though he's going good but you've got runners in scoring position and you need the runs?
Let's put a designated free throw shooter in basketball. Let some guy come off the bench for someone like Shaq or Ben Wallace and have him take his foul shots.
It's just not how the game was meant to be.

A DH is a bad thing. They should have thought of another way to make a difference between leagues, a DH just gives a HUGE advantage because of having a pitcher who bats .178 bat last you can have a batter who bats .320 with 50 homers bat 4th.
A DH is NOT real American Baseball. In Baseball movies or books you don't see the hero's of the game being DH's who don't field their just fat guys who sit on the bench and hit a home run.

I think the DH is a good thing for sure. There's alot of reason's why but the biggest to me is because I dont want some scrub pitcher throwing at my teams Pitcher. Beckett gets hit in the ribs with a fastball and cant pitch? What good is that. Carmona get hit in the leg and cant drive to throw some of his nasty stuff? what about schilling pettite, do you really want them hitting? easy out, y not have people like Ortiz, Hafner, big dudes that are the heart of the lineup that hit the crap out of the ball. DH is for sure the way to go

I think it is a good rule because it makes the lineup a little stronger . I think it is bad because some of the strategy is taken out of the game concerning pulling a pitcher and who to put 8th in your lineup while with the DH it is the 9th batter in the lineup which may set the table for top of the order.
